Also I have no horn

first suspect is the ignition switch or the fusible link on the battery wire…

second would be the load reduction relay as all the above are tied into it….

Horn only works with key in and switched on….
That is why I suspect the ignition switch first.

So the ignition switch could be the culprit, also the relay that is in the left of the fuel bypass relay when removed to clean the pronvs there is a rattle inside the relay is this relay the load reduction relay ? The fuse board was a little wet so I did remove the relays and connections ans dried them out also is there any way to bridge the load reduction relay to if it's the cause

Relays that are good usually don't rattle.

Great write up of the "X" circuit or load reduction system.

I would say that water migration in the relay could be the cause…..

I see I will get a relay and see if it helps I did dry it out but you never know, is there anyway to test if it could be the load reduction relay and also is the location of the load reduction relay as I have described thanks Briano

Also could I use a standard 4 pin 12v 40amp relay or is there something special about this load protection relay ( the one I have taken out is 12v 40amp)  thanks

Yes a 53 relay should work, as long as it is 40A.

A heavy duty relay for fog lights used at the addition of rug lights on the bumper as long as it too is 40A and usually available at your Auto Parts Store should work as well.

I must admit I thought I knew which blade (85, 86, 87 & 30) did what.

But after googling to confirm I seem to have found two different ways of wiring it up.

So I'm going to keep quiet and see what the Master of the Power has to say.

if your headlights work, the ignition switch is good :)

the 'classic' way to wire a bosch type relay is like so:
30 - main power input
85 - earth trigger
86 - live trigger
87 - main power output

but 30 and 87 can be wired either way round, as can 85 and 86. indeed you can see them wired both ways in VWs,  but the 1st example is the way it is 90% of the time ;)

Anyway, the x-relay for the ceramic fusebox is the same as an aftermarket 4 terminal relay, VW equivalent is the classic '53', replacements from newer VW are 204, 373, 643 and 645. Part numbers are 431951253H, 141951253B, 8D0951253A, 8K0951253, and 4H0951253A.

The dealer will sell you one for 16.24+VAT, or just go on a scrappy hunt
