Sloppy top mount

Post

Hi chaps
I wonder if anyone can shed some light on what's happening with my top mounts.
Have some avo coilovers on the car, however when the top mount is tightened up the spacer stops the shock from being tightened properly onto the top mount bearing, causing at to knock and rattle,
It's like the spacer is slightly too big, am I missing something here
Thanks 20230912_102455.jpg

Your Spacers or bushings are to be even with the mount cup, not taller.  This allows the washer to almost sit flat in the cup.  Different manufacturers of the mounts over the years over the years used different specs for the Cups.  If you got new Spacers with your mounts they should of been correct in height.  If your mounts came spacer less, then your existing spacers could be too tall and have to be filed to the proper height.

There should be about a hairs distance at most between the cup of the mount and the spacer for the washer to free spin a wee bit when fully tightened.

Seen it before.

Yer thanks iv found some other posts on this problem now.
In the pic, washer no10 is that not supposed to go over the sleeve then.
I will probably use the belt sander or milling machine to bring my sleeves down flush then.
With the mount off the car the spacer sits flush but when done up it pushes through the mount a tad.
Just ordered some kv v3 coilovers and new top mounts, so hopefully get some nice crisp knock free handling soon. Screenshot_20230912_123758_Chrome.jpg

But wait there is more that I forgot.

You can use a Muffler hanger off of an Opel to lessen the gap on your struts.

I used the older 3M window weld trick about a week before changing them to all a full cure, but the Opel hanger is quicker and easier.  You may have to heat them up a wee bit in boiling water to ease them on, or a tad bit of Grease.

Ended up machining 2.5 mm off the spacers, seem to nip up nicely now, will be installing my old coilovers later, should ride so much better.
Have some tool rubber at work I could stuff in the gap.
Going to see how they are without it first.
Thanks

Stick something in the gap if you can or you will find the top mount needs replacing in 6 months time.
I've filled the gap on my top mounts and just over 2 years use they are still holding up well compared to changing them every year for the MOT. My cars a daily so it does get used a lot.
