Rust woes!

Rear axle rust- too bad to salvage?

Hi there, I'm in the process of restoring my '83 Formel E. New member, so apologies if this is in the wrong place! The car has been off the road, and sat in a field for the last 7 years. At first glance it looked pretty good, but the rear of the car seems pretty bad, and I'm not too sure how to continue! Firstly, when I tried to pull it out of the field, the rear towing eye came clean off the car, due to the rot. I've been under it today, checking the fuel lines (no fuel getting to in-line filter) and I noticed the state of the axle. I'll attach pictures, so I can get an idea if it's worth replacing etc.

Thanks all!

Normal rust traps on the Mk1's, don't worry about the rear beam as it's only held on by 4 nuts and 2 bolts from the suspension so easily changed for another one or shot blasted and painted etc…
You really need to look at where the rear beam fixes to the car as if that's rusted away that's major work to make sure every thing is straight and true.

New panels etc all available at VW heritage etc.

I see in the picture you have bought some plusgas, get spraying those rusty bolts so it soaks in over a few days especialy the rear beam nuts if you wish to remove it as if they shear off you need to weld some new bolts from above.

Thanks both, maybe all is not lost! I checked where the rear beam attaches and although there is rust there, it still seems fairly sound. Where would I locate my stands when I remove the rear beam? All the bushes look pretty perished, so it'll be good to get it done. Thanks again for the help! IMAG0611.jpg

If you decide to drop the Axle as in you have to to get the fuel tank out,  Be sure that you Clean the heads of the bolts with a wire brush, use a PB-Blaster or Koil Penatrant, for a few days then use a Air Impact.

Impacts don't create the torque shear that a breaker bar does.
I have broken many a bolt with the torque sheer of a breaker bar on the sideways twist.
My impact hasn't failed me yet……
