Running in oils

Post

Hi all,

I've had my engine rebuilt a few months ago but haven't got around to putting any oil in it yet, planning on doing it asap to stop any corrosion. I've been recommended SAE  30 mineral oil for running in and I've seen people recommend Quantum Synta 10W40 for general purpose after that.

Is this what people on here have used? I've read somewhere that sae 30 was fully synthetic and Synta is semi so wasn't sure about if they were recommended to use in sequence? Maybe a rookie question I've never dealt with a rebuilt engine until now!

Cheers

I've not had to run an engine in for years but I always used the same grade of oil as I would be running the engine on normally. I would probably buy a cheaper variant of that grade of oil bearing in mind I would change it after no more than 1000 miles.
This is how I've done it on several engine rebuilds now and never had a problem but others might have a different opinion.

I've read in the past that you should not use fully synthetic oil for running in. The SAE30 is just a single viscosity grade oil so doesn't mean it's synthetic necessarily.
