Colour seems wrong
I've managed to connect up nearly all my wiring, however, I'm missing the earth to the rocker cover. I found a wire that looked like the earth (had a ring terminal on the end, right length) but it is brown with a white stripe on it. According to the Haynes diagrams, all the earths are plain brown. It hasn't been patched in, it comes out of the look sleeve as brown/white. Below is a not great picture of the part of the loom it is in. If it's not the rocker earth, what the heck is it, and how can solve the rocker earth problem. Unfortunately I don't have any of the dash in the car to test. Plus I don't want to earth anything that shouldn't be earthed! Oh, it is an 1983 GTI tintop.

Come to think of it, the actual rocker earth wire from the fuse box to the MFA plug is brown and white too. That's from a mk2 CE1 loom though.
Can you test it with the MFA and Instrument earths to see if they give continuity,?

"On the side of the head you will probably find at least one earth, for the engine management, plus GTI models with MFA have another here for the dash cluster. There is often an earth from the rear of the head to the lower coil mounting bolt too
On cars equipped with an MFA computer near the fusebox you'll find a male spade from the clock harness with brown and brown/white wires, then a wire plugs into this in the engine loom which is the earth to the head I mentioned earlier."
Here's mine:

I can't think of any other use other than an earth given it's got a ring terminal on it.
