REMOVING FRONT AND REAR SUBFRAMES

im going to be removing all teh subframes so i can have them powdercoated.

where is the best place to put 4 axle stands?

Hi Adam, there's not front sub frame on a Mk1. Tver is a rear though.

There's jacking points (at the from) by the sills, just use some wood to avoid damage.

When I dropped my rear beam I used some blocks of wood between the floor and the sill, it's not the most secure but avoided any damage, I believe there's jacking points right at the back, at least there is on cabbies!

I found the best way to remove the rear was to put the jack under the rear beam and lift the two rear wheels off the ground (make sure the car is in gear) then place and axle stand each side at the back of the sill and lower the car on.

I found using axle stands lined with some thick carpet worked a treat and did not damage things at all.

Try to have the rear of the car up as high as possible to make access easy….and use plenty of plus gas on the bolts for a few days before removing.

No probs, like Matt said get those studs well lubed up, and if you can get some heat on them because they're prone to snapping and there's no way of getting to them without cutting some of the inner skin out of the interior of the car!

When reassembling my Golf mk1 I used the 2 little subs at the rear of the car. You can jack the car up on the rear beam. You can kinda see them in this picture:


And at the front I used the front corners.
There is a little nob on each corner.

That's a lot of wood haha

Not the best Idea a pile of wood, always use axle stands if you can as they don't cost alot of money for a set.
I would not work underneath a car without them.
