Power or manual? Automatic or Manual tranny?
Remove the Down pipe.
Clean the bolts on the rack mount with a wire brush and apply pb-blaster to the bolts and nuts.
Power Drain the power steering res by unscrewing the black outer cap off the res and suck the fluid out with a baster.
Remove the outer tie-rods from the spindles.
Remove the inner tie-rod assembly from the rack.
Remove the pinch bolt off the steering gear box and slightly pry the pinch clamp apart.
Remove the Ground wire off the steering rack mount left side.
Manual remove the Gear Selector shaft from the Rack.
Power loosen but do not remove the mounts to gain access to the Power steering hose connections.
Remove the Hoses and place the ends in a baggie and Zip it shut.
Remove the mount nuts and the clamp over the mount.
Remove the Rack from the mount.

Thanks again Brian.
No power steering and it is manual. I can’t get the inner tie rods out. Which is why I’m thinking it could be easier just to loosen the 2 central clamps and pull the entire assembly out one side through the holes. But not sure what else is involved?
Here’s a pic of near side inner tie rod and it’s just not budging.
Plus i have a new steering column boot I need to fit - thought I could do it all at same time.
Cheers

You have to move the steering to the right place to get some sort of access and a thin spanner to do up the locking nut so it moves up the thread, I used some water pump pliers to hold the track rod while turning the locking nut.
Access is the main problem with this job, you may find supporting the engine and removing the rear engine mount may also help.

I recently did mine both sides, got to admit it was a bit of a pig but its doable with normal spanners.
I used a very short old school adjustable (king dick) on the lock nut
You only need half a turn on the lock nut and its easy from there

I didn’t even think there was a lock nut - is that towards middle of car? I’ve just been trying to undo the inner rod without holding anything else.

I did a power steering rack on my 90, and without removing the inner rods it was a right royal pain in the posterior. When you are working from under a jacked car that is say 24 inches up, there isn't enough swing room to get the rack in place and then wiggling the rack to the left to clear the right and then to the left, it is sooooo much easier to remove the inners.
I also forgot to mention that if you haven't power washed the under carriage, you best wear eye protection as that crud that falls off will get all in your eyes. ears and where ever. Shoot even if you have washed your under carriage.

There is indeed a slim nut with just 2 flats on it, I've heard rumours of reverse threads but mine were both conventional both sides

Ah shoot. I did see those 2 flats on the inside- additional to the 2 flats on the inner rod . But didn’t touch them. With the spanner you see on the image, I managed to turn everything counter clockwise not quite a quarter turn. Could I have damaged something by doing this? I simply turned everything with the spanner on the flats of the inner rod?WATERNAIR said
