Rear axle disc conversion

Post

So finally getting stuck into this and ripping second hand parts apart ready for powder coating.

Couple of question / needs

1. Rear calliper. I realised I have never stripped a set of rears down before and guessing it is a lot different and more complex than fronts. How far should I take these from where they are now in the pictures. Took the carriers off and will replace nipples and pipes. I want to do the cylinder seal also once someone tells me the best way of removing it.  Also the hand break assy on the back is that a simple unbolt it and then refit once all shiny and red or are there springs and positions to worry about?  Some words of advise here would be great.

2. Hand brake cable brackets. You will see from the pictures there are some bendy flat steel brackets that hold the flexi hose and I guess the hand brake cable. If someone has a picture how the attach to the axle or strut etc so I can get mine in the right place.

3.  Discovered my lovely second hand calliper and carrier set has not calliper bolts with it. If someone could let me know the size or where to get the bolts that would be nice. At the AGM Sunday so if crazy or heritage have a stand there with some on then keep me 4 back please.

Thanks all in advance.

Hope you grabbed the e-brake cables and actuator as they are different. Keep them the actuators Lubed.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

It looks like you have them.

Here is a good how I dod that Timbo's Guide.

Only seen them once on a Scirocco that I was visiting one afternoon to gap, drink a beer and grab a Crankshaft.  many many moons and earth rotations around the sun.

I managed it o it ain't that hard.

I'm pretty sure the handbrake attachmnet bracket just unbolts. I think I did so on mine to paint them.

Dunno how to get the seal out.

Flexi pipe and hand brake cable brackety thing. Bolt everything into position and then place the bracket where it fits. I had to make my own as I didn't have any and Ijust used some 2mm plate, made a 'U' shaped bracket and then used 2 self tapper into the top of the beam along the  same sort of line that the hard lines currently follow.

You'll need the scirocco mk2 hand brake cables and you'll need to cut about 5mm off the guide tube under the car.
The handbrake cables then only clip into the foldy clips on the beam. Don't run them through round guides that go through the beam mount bit.

there's a bit in the Haynes Restoration Manual about adding rear discs.

1. 1st work the handbrake lever, it should work smooth and the piston should move outwards. Make sure bleed nipples are free, remove the flexi lines as well. If good get a proper windback tool, wind the pistons out and do the seal and dust boot at the very least, then rebuild. Get slider boot kits all round, making sure you get a decent quality kit which includes the proper grease. clean out all the slider pin holes, making sure no rust. rebuild and pack with grease etc.

2. on the mk2/3 golf they just shove into the end of the beam, you'll have to put a little thought into getting them on the mk1 beam. not rocket science as they say ;)

3. new caliper bolts will be included with slider kits usually, and if not they will be included in pad kits for sure.

an extra note, these are MK3 golf calipers and so mount upside down vs the factory mk2 scirocco 16v ones. This means you either mount them upside down to keep the factory pipe/cable routing, or redo liens and cables to suit calipers mounted the right way up.

if you go 1st route just means you got to hang calipers right way up to bleed. 2nd route means the scirocco 16v cables might be too short, on my cabrio I trimmed the cable tubes down under the car about 10mm, but other guys have used pre-90 mk2 gti cables, which are quite long at 1800mm but apparently go fine
