Really simple question re Headlamp Switch

Post

Hi,

I'm steadily working through electrical gremlins on my '93 Mk1 Cabrio. I've now got a battery in having cleaned up as many contacts as i can find including a partial dismantle of the CE2 fuse box.

Unsurprisingly, given that the car has stood for many years,  I am faced with a few issues. In fact I'm pleasantly surprised how much does work!!

My question is a simple one related to the operation of the main sidelight/headlight switch. I've not been able to locate a handbook and have not owned a Mk1 before so…..

Q1 - How does the headlamp switch work?

Clearly the first click is sidelights and the next click is headlights. I assume the  headlights only work with ignition on? If I have the switch in "first click" position and then turn the ignition on I seem to then get the headlamp low beam on. Is that correct?

Q2 Is there a "parking light" facility on the indicator stalk? On other German cars I have had this i.e the front and rear parking lights operate on the side selected with key out.

Q3. is about the separate fog light switch. Again I have two positions and I'm guessing first click is Rear Fog Light and second click is the 2 front spotlights (in the grille) is that correct?  Will they work only when the headlights are on?

Sorry to ask such elementary questions but I don't want to be chasing faults that aren't there!

Any help/suggestions gratefully accepted. Or even a scan of the relevant page from a driver's handbook??

Peter

Really simple question re Headlamp Switch

The front spotlights in the grill are “spotlights” not fog lights, they come on with main beam

Q1. Yes 1st click side lights, 2nd click main beam which only work with ignition on.

Q2. Yes parking lights via the indicator stalk as long as no ones relayed the headlights.

Q3. Fog light switch 1st click is front fog lights (if you have them but very rare) 2nd click is the rear fog light and only works with ignition on and headlights on main beam (2nd click)

Thanks so much!

Now I have a better idea of what should be happening…

Any ideas on the Dip Beam operation with ign on and switch on first click??

Cheers

relay your headlights, best cost effective upgrade you can do.
More light and you take the hi-current load of your head light switch.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

With ignition off and headlight switch on 1 click you should have rear lights, number plate lights and the little side 4w bulbs inside the headlight on, if you switch the ignition on same as above but also the main H4 bulb inside the headlight should glow dim. If not then the headlight resistor (near the expansion tank) has been removed.

Thanks again for your help - I'm pretty sure I've got this sorted now - although I think I'll be chasing wiring Gremlins for some tome to come!

Done some interesting reading about Dim/Dip systems. not something I've ever encountered before - and I've had LOTS of German Cars!
