Radiator

So opened the garage up yesterday and my rad had dumped is sh1t all over the floor.

So need to replace my f I want to go anywhere this spring/summer. Hoses are not the best either so decided to put some other mods on hold and go for the essentials

Would like to change for an all metal rad as it just looks nice compared to the plastic end caped ones. Also will do new black silicon hose set to tidy up under the bonnet.

Anyone know the best place to buy a direct replacement all metal rad and hose set from for a 1.6 1980 GTI?

Loads of places on the web but don’t want to spend 250 and get something that modes not fit or I need to modify.

Thanks.

I can find them on fleabay for about the price of a new plastic and aluminum radiator.  I have seen them in the side mount as well as the Pin mount.  I prefer the Pin mount, so if yours is side bolted, then you may also need to purchase the rubber pin booties.  Also if you use the upper bolt clamps that the Cabriolet uses you can rid yourselves of the shroud c-clip which was a poor after thought on the whole car over hear at least.

When my 81 ripped the tanks off for vibration, I found a brass and copper one.  That Radiator was still on the car after 19 years with no leaks…

When my Cabriolets radiators take to peeing on the floor, I will replace them with all aluminum…

i have a memory (that may have got distorted through time) that the mod to do was to fit the rad from a diesel, which was all copper, or maybe copper/brass as briano suggests, if you could find one..

no need to mess about, just buy a standard 1.6/1.8 gti 8v radiator. more than up to the job and will last a good 20 years+ if you get a good make. hella brand are cheap as chips, also nissens are good and widely available

Yep ordered a Nissens in the end. Came up with the right dimensions eventually but was listed as diesel. None the less after lots of checks with a tape it is the same as the dimensions they listed for it.

Thanks

from memory the early mk1 diesel had this size, but later m1/2 diesel rad is huuuuge, takes up nearly all available space.

no need for a standard gti though, I had a normal 8v on my 2.0 16v on kjet & digi and never had any trouble with it

Get at least the top radiator card as that helps direct the air flow into the radiator, also stops all the dirt and water sprayed at the front of the car while driving going all over the inside of the bonnet.

Side rad cards are now getting harder to find….

The top car is very important, more so than the side cards.

It is used to keep your tools from falling in between the Radiator and the valance.

It is used to stop Engine compartment air from being drawn back over the Radiator (matrix) at a stop.

Helps cooling the radiator efficiently.
