Vehicle Speed Sensor Compatibility!

Good evening one and all.

I'm converting a Mk1 Caddy with a PD Engine and want to have cruise control along side the cable drive speedo. Cue some research into Vehicle Speed Sensors.

I'm let to believe I'll be in need of a VSS on the back of the clocks like this (below) Part Number: 321907345B. Can anyone confirm or deny for me if this is the case or if other modules might do the same thing?

Obviously my Caddy's clocks don't have an MFA so I'll need to obtain the sensor from another vehicle or parts supplier

Many thanks, Fuus

There were 2 styles of sensors, one for MMO gauges, and one for VDO.

In the Cabbies they used the same 2 styles for premium, or Active radios to increase volume the faster you went.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Want to take a bet on whether the two sensors are interchangeable?

I'm against dropping the money on another set of clocks with an MFA Speed Sensor in the back as that'll be £100+

The only sensor I can seem to find new online is the T3 VSS (the VDO one I think) which looks like it might fit, but I suppose only buying one and trying it would suffice.

I had one out of my 92 MMO and one on a 89 VDO that had Cruise, and side by side they are differently made.
IIRC the 89vdo had little barbs out of it towards the speedo and my 92mmo was smooth.  I suspect it is a different manufacturer…. Not that it would or wouldn't work.

Whether they would interchange I don't know, as I didn't need the unit in my 92, as they had cut out the Aktive system, and it was left installed in the clocks, but I took the one out of my 89 prior to scrapping as I was going to install Cruise on my 93… I just have never got that far with the project in 10 or 11 years.  :)  So I can't tell you for sure.  Rubjonny may know off the top of his cranium.

rubjonny apparently you might be able to shed some light.

You'd hope given they're both hall sensors and as such that theoretically the magnets inside must be set up pretty similarly!
Cheers for the pointers Briano

Some more research and it definitely looks like the T3 part is compatible with VDO clocks, so hopefully that's what I've got

Hi there, hope you don't mind me jumping in as our issues seem kind of related.

To cut a long story short I have a VW T25 campervan that I have just put a Golf MK3 GTI AGG engine into. Apparently having a VSS helps get a few MPG back and I purchased this gowesty sensor hoping to fit on my speedo.

Unfortunately it looks like a past owner swapped the speedo and although it is VDO this is the port on the back:

When trying to fit the gowesty sensor it would not mount deep enough due to the metal housing. I asked brickwerks where I bought the sensor and they say they do not think it is a T25 speedo, but also Rubjonny doesn't recognise it as a golf speedo so I am stumped.

Can I ask what the back of your speedo looks like in terms of the port for the VSS. Is it like mine?

Hi bmouthboyo.

Mine looks nothing like yours I'm afraid. I think the previous owner of your T25 has found a speedo out of another car of the era (Volvo maybe?) and crafted it to fit, so maybe you could find the original manufacturer (look for any part numbers on it and google), and then find out if that manufacturer has their own VSS?

Annoyingly there doesn't seem to be any part number on it:(

Thanks for help though and hope you sort your issue :)

Written above "made in germany" is that an Audi logo I spy? If so it'll be a VW speedo, you just need a different VSS somehow. Maybe specific to T25s.

If you're struggling drop Go Westy's direct a message in the US, they were super knowledgeable in helping me out, and went the extra mile too.

The go westy VSS's are the ones people use but they are designed for this kind of T25 clock:

If my clocks are non T25 they would have been installed with a very early (1994ish) Mk1 Gti it used to have, back then were VW and Audi still the same company?

Found a shot of the Back of the MMO and VDO guages that are installed over here to show the Different connections I have seen.
