Play in gear lever

1.8 gti cab 1983

The gear lever seems a little lose on the car I have just picked up, the car is not drivable yet (will be in a few more weeks). I have not had too much chance to investigate yet, but is there a gear linkage replacement kit that can be brought to tighten up the selections, or is a lose box the norm?

I had this on my recent purchase. There are several kits available. I got one on EBay with loads of bushes, two linkages, and the spring bits for the gearstick itself, but there are other kits available with fewer bits in them. I guess it depends what you need/want to replace.

This is the one I got: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351724385606

I've only ever had to change the bushes and not bothered with the whole kit.
267,000 miles and 27 years and I've still got the original rods and gearstick fixings and no play in the gear stick…..

Yes: I supplied the big kit to the garage but they only fitted the bushes and the two linkages. They gave me the rest back. It's made it a lot better.
