Peanut butter - old school and messy
Boiled linseed oil - very effective and cheap
Heat gun - I'd not bother
Meguiars tyre gel - still use it to this day on my cheaper valets
G techniq C4 - more expensive, but permanent
Other methods are available.

Sanding, polishing the handles makes them sparkle.
Paint comes to mind. I will tell you that on my Cabriolets, 2000 Grit wet/dry, then a plastic polish does wonders on the B-Pillars.
For the Dash if yours is black, and leather wheel, Kiwi-Quick Shine makes them look new. Even the older Air-Bag Centers will Shine and match.

Hi all, it's for the rear number plate holder on a cabriolet also the plastics inside and outside the car. I was told that shoe polish would do the trick, is that true?

Depends, Shoe Polish on the outside isn't a good thing Krylon Fusion Satin Black is about the SAME, and will last with Proper Prep which is how I did my rear plate holder.
Kiwi instant shine shake well apply in small smooth strokes. It is very drippy and can get away from you. For my Instrument Bezel I sprayed it with 2 coats of Krylon Fusion Satin black Paint, also my rear quarter sides as well Holds up well.
Kiwi Instant Shine works on the inside. Plastics on the inside can be cleaned and shined with Plastique brand over here Polish. I wet Sanded my Door handles and used my Dremel and Plastique to get them back to OEM. I have taken old white door handles and turned them to new.

I use Autoglym trim gel, it’s oily and smells good but always brings my cabriolet trims up nice including the rear number plate holder plastic, bumpers, mirrors etc.
Follow the instructions on the bottle and all should be well.

I bought Wurth plastic dip in Schwarz black for my mk2 golf bumpers and wheel arch covers and im so happy with the finish, I used elbow grease to degrease the surface and then applied the plastic dye and it done a great job, I never sanded or prepped, think ill do my mk1 bumbers soon as it was that good

I've used Forever Black trim dye on my original exterior plastics, they still look like new now (6 years later).

Well if it is hidden by the number plate or something, I leave them alone. Otherwise I clean them with wd-40

Hi Briano1234, I need 1as it is missing, without it the number plate will be at an angle. Is there something else I can use?

Well I don't have number plates on the front of my ride.
So, there are plenty of things that I could use as a replacement over on this side of the pond. Alas I don't know what you able to get, and or you could get a replacement that you good OEM one from werk34, or vwheritage, classic parts store.

Sounds like you just need a nylon or plastic screw insert.

Can you get behind the number plate? If so you could just use standard plastic number plate screws and nuts.

Seems you got the shine sorted, but thought I'd recommend Owatrol Polytrol for faded plastics.. I've only used it on a few exterior trims on my daily mk4 so far, but it seems to be holding up well in the salt.. Got great reviews as far as I can tell
