Petrol grade opinion

Post

having very recently purchased a Mk 1 1.8 GTi in what I understand to be original spec, can I please have users opinions on what grade of fuel should be used - I've just filled up with super unleaded (97 RON) though enquire if anyone uses ordinary unleaded (95 RON). Are the valve guides as built suitable?

Cheers
Ian

You can use either if you adjust the advance accordingly, but many find they are happier on super unleaded 97 or 98.

Petrol grade opinion

Mine is a 1989 cabby and it's much happier on super unleaded.

No problem with valves or any engine damage with using unleaded petrol as that applies to cars which run on leaded petrol eg british made cars as they need the lead in petrol to lubricant the valves.

Gti's are sent out from factory with hardened valves, seats and set up to run on 98 RON (super unleaded)petrol you can retard the timing to run them on 95 RON (unleaded) but you lose a little bit of power and I found I used more petrol and tick over was always a little lumpy how ever much I played around.

I found super unleaded is the best petrol for my DX engine GTi.

Nice looking car you have, bet your are pleased as punch.
