well new bearings and thrust washers on the crank plastigauge them, then think of upgrading to the 2.0L pump and the 36mm gears. On pre-90 engines you will need to probably nuy longer bolts to bolt it up, then you take the intake tube off your old pump and use it on the new, if you don't you will never get the pan to bolt up.

Did you measure them after installing and then what does the Crank look like, as they will wear in to the old crank and if your crank journal was worn it will have to scratch the bearings on break in, and you used a lube when installing the new bearings to the cap so it wasn't a dry install or first run?

The 36mm gears that the 2.0l pumps have means more fluid movement, the operating pressures are the same, but I did notice that as the oil 10w40 got hot, it tended to stay with a higher idle pressure.
Over here on this side of the pond the 2.0 pumps are actually cheaper than the 30-32mm 1.8 ones.

Some bearing sets have bearings and Thrust Washers that are separate.
Some bearing sets have bearings with built in Thrust washers.
The last set I bought had the bearings with the inbuilt thrust washers.
They prevent in and out movement of the Crank, and are usually on the 3rd con rod.
vwheritage on the Cabriolet engine, shows a picture of the crank bearings with the thrust washers
