No Start, looking for new Starter Motor

Post

So I have issues with my 91 cabby automatic.
Starts and runs great but when doing a short stop it won't start, no crank just a click. If I wait an hour or more it will often start again.
I've installed a hard start relay but it doesnt solve the issue.

My next thing is to replace the starter motor with solenoid but can't really be sure what starter motor to get.
Could anyone point me in the right direction since it seems to differ between automatic and manual.

The motor code is 2H and VIN WVWZZZ15ZMK031633

Thanks!

I had the same issue with mine, I removed the starter motor and had it reconditioned with a new solenoid and it's fine now.

Also, with the starter removed, a good motor factor will be able to reference it to the correct replacement, if you want to go that route, I was told there is a choice of three different possibilities £100 - £140.

The Rebuild cost me £60.

Reminds me of the old days of my 1976 mini when I had to hit the starter motor solenoid with a hard bit of wood to get the car to start... you could try that with yours ?

I don't have the car at my location right now so can't look up what the model is for the starter motor. I first tought just fixing the solenoid, but it will be easier for me to just change the starter since it also has a new solenoid.

Since I'm driving it 500 km in a couple of weeks I'd tought ordering a new starter so I have one when I get home and change it before going so I don't end up stalled somewhere. :/ Guess I could try wacking it with a stick if it comes to that :D

Looked at the part list but can't figure out the part number
https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/golf+cabriolet/goc/1991-44/9/911-208000/#1

And when looking at different part sites these two models came up but looks very different still claiming they fit my car and with engine code 2H.

After some more research it look like it might be part no 027911023. But guess I won't be sure until I remove the old one.

the upper one but there are 2 styles one for solid flex plates one for spoked.  the solid on a spoked will chew the flex plate.

the spoked starter has knob protrusions on casting where the yellow circles are

Yes for a spoked flex plate as you can see the nubs for the spoked ones to the left of the bolt holes.

Took me about two hours but finally got it removed!

Looks decent, might just try to replace the solenoid.

that is a solid flex plate starter.  If you have a spoked flex plate I wouldn't use it.

Using a solid flex plate starter on a Spoked flex plate can and will lead to the spoked flex plate stripping teeth.

My daughter who had a starter issue on one of my cabbies in Maryland 2 states away from me, had a parts store change out a 3 week old Bosch Flex Plate Starter without me knowing about it.  The Chain store replaced my brandy new starter with the solid flex plate starter.

Speed forward and I found the intermittant issue with  a relay. (Not the hot start relay) see: 90-93 Automatic No Crank Hot, or Cold | Volkswagen Owners Club Forum

Well 3 months later she said when she was starting it it grinded…. well by the time I got to look at it, 15 teeth of the flex plate were stripped where if the starter landed on that spot you couldn't get it started.

As I couldn't locate a flex plate I welded the teeth and filed them.  That lasted the 5 months I needed to locate a solid flex plate in a breaker.

The only way to tell the differences is in the hump at the bolt holes.  No humps Solid, Humps Spoked.

Look at the bottom of the tranny, as here is a solid and a spoked, that seems to be a spoked one.

Ok here's how it looks.

So this is a spoked flexplate? Why no protrusions on the mount?

Briano's picture is from the opposite side I would guess.  You can see your fixings but not on his picture.
