No 1st n 2nd after gearbox change

Post

Hi
Changed the gearbox on my mk1 16v,
Now neutral only wiggles to the right an I can't move it across enough to select 1st n 2nd.
Didn't get chance to have proper look today as had to down tools to come to work.
Briefly looked online but all the info is so old now all the pictures n links don't work.
I understand I need to adjust something?
Is it the main rod with a spleen end? I need to remove it and move it round a few teeth n put back on?
Other than this issue she is ready for her first road drive in 15 years, itching to get out in this lovely weather
Thanks in advance

This is some sexy reading.
Thanks just what I'm after,
Can't beat a colour picture, can see straight away where/how to set 15mm gap, hope it works.
Just found the perfect piece of aluminium at work measuring 15mm
Get home from work today at midnight, gonna go straight in my garage n try n do this,
Moving Jack's around the garage floor in the middle of the night is super noisy tho lol

I used a speed clamp to hold the linkage and spacer block tight together in the right place, that made setting the front of the rod a lot easier. Photo oin this post - https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/forum/index.php?page=topicview&id=projects%2Fyour-mk1-golfs_2%2F83-gti-now-mot-d&start=20#post_1636436

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here

The engine has changed and the mounts will have moved/sagged so don't get too hung up on the 15mm

the times I have done it is to disconnect the gear selector ball joints and clamp, get the GB in reverse and have someone hold the gearstick in reverse whilst you tighten up everything

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

Yer the 15mm thing was rubbish, I ended up just guessing the gap, probably more like 20mm now, all works great now every gear feels good, the sticks been sloppy for years, feels nice now with new bushes ect.
Took her out earlier, even tickled the red line a couple of times,
Much fun.
Thanks for the help everyone 👍
