Mystery button on a 1983 GTI dashboard

Post

Hello,

Since a few months I have been the happy owner of a 1983 1.8 GTI. While I have learned a lot during this time, I recently noticed said button on my dashboard and I can't figure out what its purpose is. It's a simple button that comes back up after pressing it, so it doesn't seem to be a toggle of some sorts. I have nervously pressed the button when the ignition was on, but nothing happened.

Before opening up the dashboard and checking the wiring, is there a common type of button like this? Since there is no icon I figured it is aftermarket, but then again I might be wrong here. Any information is much appreciated!

Please don't mind the grime around the buttons. The dashboard will be getting a thorough cleaning soon.

Ain't OEM.

Could be anything then but usually when the horn buttons malfunction people add a horn button on the dash. Anyways a blanc placeholder doesn't cost that much if you want to get rid of it.

Be Careful, as it could be an ejection seat…Y'all british do some weird things.   LOL….

Take care when removing that panel as if you remove the hazards switch there are 2 itty-bitty wires one brown that goes to the center of the lamp, and a blue and black wire that is to a spad connector, that blue/black wire is 12V live all the time to f14 or f19 for the turns, and if you short it to the itty-bitty brown,  or frame you blow the fuse and when going back you find that your turns only glow when you use them.  To prevent this use a small piece of heat shrink and cover the bare connector to about 1/2 inch above the crimp, you can still blow the fuse, but for most cases you don't.
