I believe it was silver but could be wrong. When I replaced mine it was a silver one and I Shultz it to protect it a bit from road dirt etc

Well I'd bet my Wife that they were sliver but as Hugh said you might want to give it some kind of projective coating, like the rest of the underside.

Over here they are "silver?" well actually Metal as in unpainted, and unprimed.  Or for 5 dollars more you can get the black primed.

What I tell folks is to do a couple of things first.
Clean the exterior with 100 proof alcohol, then place some self sticking roofing material on at the top, and a couple of strips on the bottom.  Cover all the outlets and sender hole, then spray with a self etching primer. Follow that with a coat of color if you choose but better is the body Shotz or hardening under coat, and a coat of color over that once it hardens.

The self sticking roofing material is avail in 6 inch wide strips and when stuck to the tank before pain or after sound deadens it……

My new one was silver but as it was a daily I got there entire underside waxoiled in black. It's pretty hard to see when it's tucked up above the rear beam!

Briano1234  What a waste of perfectly good alcohol  :o

Good tip there mucker, I've got a new one on the way so will be following your advice.

Is Wild Turkey an acceptable alcohol to use? Or can I just use some panel wipe?

Whilst Wild Turkey is ok to use, remember it is 80 proof, and using Jameson's or Bushmills would be Sacrilege, I usually use 100 proof Denatured Alcohol from the paint store.

Panel wipe is good too.

:)

Wild Turkey and the like are better applied in your tank and not the cars….. (well they are trying to get the e-15 and 20 fuel over here)…….
