Mk1 Not starting

I just parked my South African year 2005 Golf Mk1. It was fine .Now it's not starting. There is no sound when l turn the key but all other lights are showing on dashboard . If l short wire the starter it starts .What can be the problem

Well not owning a 2005 golf MK1?  I would suspect the ignition key failing in the Start Position.

Why, because if you leave it in the run, and jump the starter it runs.

No Chime when you insert the key is another gimme.

next simple check, unplug ignition switch and loop a wire between red and red/black. if it cranks, ignition switch. if not, ignition or starter wiring, or alarm/immobiliser issue
