Fuel consumption
Hello all, I have been driving my Mk1 Golf GTi (1.8 DX) for the past couple.of years and noticed that I get around 200 miles full tank.
Is this normal? Or would I need to adjust the CO to get a better consumption? What would be the best CO setting?
Thank you

How do we know whats left in the tank when you fill up??? What's around 200 miles; 180? 220? What journeys do you do, short across town rush hr with a cold engine or long distance summer cruise on empty country roads. The difference in mpg will be massive.
What's the actual MPG? Distance since last filled up/gallons in this fill up. Gals to litres = litres / 4.54 .
i.e. 200miles / 7.5 gallons = 26.67 mpg
When you know the actual mpg you can decide if its good/bad/WTH and act accordingly.

Check it the way early-1800 has described, don't take any notice of the computer or whatever it is they call it in these old Golfs.
I used to get approx 35mpg , that was short runs around the back roads here and the odd 40 mile run on A roads.
I've had two 1.8's and neither would run all that well on the recommended CO level, I used to set it at about 2% or just over and the plugs were always a nice healthy colour.

When measured the GTI is usually around 35mpg on usually long ish runs fun runs not daily grind to work etc.
It did 39.999 on the club trip to Wofsburg a few years back (2012!!), Motorway crawl in foul wet weather from Yorks to Dover, cruising at 70+ on mways to the fatherland and same again back via tootling around the Floriade in Venlo and inlaws in southern Holland and then finally to Rotterdam Europort - Hull ferry and back to South Yorks.
The latest MOT show CO at 2.83

Hi,
Just an update….I adjusted my CO setting from 1.5% to around 0.8% and now I'm getting an extra 30miles or so…..plus no longer smelling rich. Car runs ok, no fuel starvation, took on motorway as well…..so the CO setting did do the trick.
