Mk1 golf c 16v no power to fuel pump

Non start

My mk1 is originally a golf c 1.1 l converted to a mk2 16v. Conversion was carried out before i bought the car.
So i Was driving home today, everything was well, Car cut out and wouldn't start. I checked the cap and rotor arm and the metal on the end of the arm was all bent. So I straightened it out perfectly and rebuilt it as i was juston the side of the road and the car still wouldn't start. Not had the car long and the fuel gauge was showing 1/4 so I thought I wonder if its out of fuel if the gauge was wrong. So walked to the station and got some fuel. Once filled the car still wouldn't start.

Then i realised i couldn't hear the fuel pump as the pump was quite noisy anyway. So got recovered as I had no other option. Once home I grabbed my power probe and confirmed there was no live at the fuel pump on cranking. Car looks to be running full mk2 stuff as it has the ignition module, another big module under the bones and 1 more little one inside the car so I presume it may have a mk2 fuse board. Does anybody have any idea what relay I should be checking if it's wired in to one as there only looks to be 4 relays onthe fuse box in the passenger footwear and all the fuses seem to be OK ? Thanks in advance

as a test you can jumper out the Fuel pump relay, or substitute the horn relay.

If your pumps are making noise then that isn't a good sign for the pump, so do you have an in-tank pump as well as a main pump?

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

As in just bridge it with some wire ? And it was a golf c so I think the pump is an after market one anyway that's connected about 1* away from the fuel outlet on the tank so assuming it only has 1 external pump. Got a part number for the horn relay as the 4 relays all look to be different

for testing I recommend you use a 17/18 or 100 relay in the fuel relay socket, rather than a std switched 53 type.

the fuel relay socket main live and output terminals are much larger than the ones on the 53 relay, its possible using a 53 wont make such a good connection and you'll be sent down a false path chasing an issue which isnt there if that makes sense

1st check is if it has a proper GTI fuel tank if theres only 1 fuel pump, and the swirl pot inside the tank is good:

if its not a gti tank and there is no lifter or swirl pot, that'll probably be why the main pump was so loud.

next need to figure out which relay is for the fuel pump, and check the connections. how you check the wiring also depends on what was done to wire it up! was it set to be triggered safely by the ecu, or always on with ignition, or was a kjet 8v relay used with rev counter trigger etc.
