Mk1 gearbox rebuild advice needed

Post

I'm in the middle of reatoring my 1983 Pirelli edition GTI and the engine is off being fully rebuilt at the moment and I want to get the box sent off to be taken apart and rebuilt but I'm not sure who to use?

Ive tried all the google search options but thought Id ask if there was anyone here that could point me in the direction of someone? I live in Beds but would deliver the box and collect it within reason?

Thanks

Also have a look at my thread on the projects forum as I'm doing a rolling feed of the strip down of the car.

Crazy Quiff do recon gearboxes on an exchange basis.

Click link below, about 1/2 way down the page.

Is there anybody out there that can do an overhaul of my box for me as I didn't really want to go to the expense of swapping it for a recon box?

Ive told there's a way you can overhaul them and wanted to see if there's anyone who can do it for me?

Thanks

Did you drive the car before starting the restoration? Was the box OK?

The gearboxes tend to be quite tough if kept full of oil and the selector bushes are ok and setup correctly.

If it was running OK with no funny noises I'd simply replace the 3 seals and the green tin lid on the end, replace the GL4 oil and refresh the bushes.

Getting some one to pull it to bits for no reason is a good way to burn a few hundred quid

My gearbox cover 270,000 miles without any problems, regular oil changes and I replaced a could of seals over the years and that's it…
As early-1800 said no point taking it apart if it was ok before unless you have money to burn.

I've seen a company online from America that rebuilds them. He also sells parts for the gearbox to. I'm considering giving it a go myself.

Currently he sells the oem syncros, bushings etc. Not sure anyone in UK sells them?

This guy did mine, well did an exchange.my 02A with small flanges for a 02J with large flanges, he pulled the box apart, checked it over and blasted a coat of satin black over it, think it was £350.
He's really helpful and very accommodating.

Nice one guys, thanks for the replies.

My box has done 198k but I bought the car after it had been stood for 8 years so I haven't a clue if it's any good or not. 🙈
