Loss of power and Cuts out under load

Hi guys bought a mk1 caddy 2 weeks ago its a 1.6D and had been sat for some time undriven, so far it has had a new alternator and starter motor, however today when driving it dropped all of its power and cut out when restarting after the cutout it runs really rough and emits a fair bit of blue smoke, the more i drive it the worse it is getting, when starting first thing in the morning its starts first time however idles really rough and sounds to be misfiring and also smokes, the cold start/choke doesnt seem to make any difference to the startup,

If anyone has had these issues before or has any idea to fix it will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

Check for air in the clear line, the direction of bubbles tells you which side is leaking air.

Rings that are bad and you can loose compression.

Bad Glow plugs can cause the Cylinders not to pre-warm to aid in compression.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Hi thanks for the reply,

the air in the clear line appears to be coming from the diesel filter and going towards the diesel pump,
The glow plugs have never been changed by myself and also i have no history of them being changed so ill get those sorted asap, with the rings ill compression test to see if there are any major differences between the cylinders and let you know the results, with regards to the diesel pump does anyone know of any rebuild kits for them or would it be a case of new pump as sometimes it feels like its almost starving of fuel?

If you have air in the clear line, then that can cause fuel flow interruptions in the output.

You probably need to re-annul the crush washers, and tighten the input clamps on the input side of the fuel filter, and make sure that the filter is tight, and that the bleeder screw (remove it) then wrap it with teflon tape and re-insert.

To re-annul the crush washers, or you can buy new.
Remove the banjo-bolt.

Sand the washers smooth, and shiny…take all burrs down…  After you have sanded them hold them over a ciggie lighter until they change hue or go from shiney to dull.  The re-use.

Do this for the IP and well as the filter.

GP's come in 2 varieties, that is 7 second and wait-forever.  So remove one of yours and take it with you when you get new so you get the proper type.

The 7 seconds ones draw more amperage, than the Wait-forever…The different versions use different glow-plug relays and are not intermixable..

Glow plugs from what I know of them tend to go bad one at a time, and until the last one goes, you can usually start your car….

The 7-seconds ones tend to go bad in about 1-1/2 years and I always carried a spare in my glove box along with the 2 wrenches it took to remove them, one for the bus bar and one for the plug, Okay I used 1/4 inch drive magnetized deep well sockets.
