Mechanical Pump Not Pulling Petrol

Post

I have a 1.5 GX and it runs a mechanical pump off the block of the engine. It sucks petrol fine when its above around half tank petrol remaining but after that it stutters as i drive as it cannot pull enough petrol and if the car is off and try to start it, it wont start/ pull fuel from the tank. Once i top it up again it works fine. Any suggestions?

On carb engined cars the petrol is drawn via the outlet on the level sender fitted to the top of the tank. This outlet includes a plastic filter fitted on its end.

When the tank filler pipe rots (as they all do) and fills the tank with rust, debris and water the filter clogs and starves the engine of fuel. People then often shorten the pipe and/or remove the filter to stop this happening. Works OK until the fuel drops below length of the shortened pipe.

Or it could be that its still getting clogged as the tank is full of more rubbish than petrol

Under the back seat remove the inspection cover and remove the level sender and have a look see.

Just a side note that you need 3/4 or less of fuel to take the inspection cover then sender out.

Open all windows and no electric torches, use gas safe led lighting.  Open the fuel cap as well.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Ive removed the sender uni and had a look into the tank many times and its very clean in there. Ive tried many things to get it to suck the petrol up, ive attached extra hose to the sender to lengthen it, shortned and lengthened the outlet pipe and checked if it is clean and still nothing. Ive tried sucking the petrol up myself and nothing comes through.

Does the outlet look like its been molested? When it fails to draw petrol and you remove the level sender is the pipe wet (i.e. it is 100% def certainly on your childs life) submerged in the petrol?

When it is working if you remove the hose from the pump to the carb and crank the engine does it give good health spurts or a dribble (ooh err missus)
