Not sure if I am posting in correct area but I am looking for advice and guidance on getting my hands on an engine of correct age for car.
I apologise if I am posting in the wrong area, please feel free to point me in the right dierection…
I have a 1.8gti engine in my 1980 series1 golf the engine I am currently running is from a mk2 and will be up and on the road very soon… but I am looking for a 1.6gti engine to have in the garage and slowly rebuild.
What auxiliaries will I need with the engine I buy? I presume everything strapped on the mk2 engine will be different…
Gear box?
Wiring loom?
Alternator?
Etc etc
I would like to rebuild the new 1.6 engine as and when I have time and then when the golf is off the road for some welding either next year or the year aftr, swap engines over. I.e. Drop the 1.8 out and drop the 1.6 in But I would like the 1.6 engine to have everything with it ready to go. Lots of parts are easy to get hold of but the actual big bits I presume are not so easy to find.
NEXT QUESTION…
Has anyone brought a replacement eg 1.6gti engine and ideally gear box? And how much can you expect to pay in this country?
Excuse any silly sounding questions but when it comes to mechanics I know what I need to know to get by but I am new to cars.
Any advise would be appreciated!
Best wishes, Paul

I would have to ask which type of Fueling that you currently have is a better question as in Carb'ed, CIS, or Digi. As those are more pertinent to getting the proper head.

ps. I like your phrase but how do you know my hands are not the size of oil drums!
Because size don't matter, I have some bare minimum knowledge. I don't have any hands on. I do however have hands on experience of the MK1 Golf/Rabbit from 1981-Nov 1999, Ordered and Purchased Oct of 1980 and Mk1 Cabriolet from 1990,-93 Digifants @ 2004 when I bought my first one. I currently only have a 92, and 93 Cabriolet…..

Mk1 golf tin tops all used k-jet.
Mk1 cabriolet used K-jet till the very last couple of years, approx 1991 onwards used digifant.
Mk2 golfs - early cars used k-jet till about 1988 ish then they moved to digifant.
I might not be 100% on this as it's just from memory.

Digi I had a Square coil pak, and the Digi II had the old timey roundy coil.
Never really seen A Carbed Rabbit save for a friends 77, most all I see mow are CIS or Digi.
Dodge/Chrysler made a Golf knock off called the Omni/Horizon that was Carbed, (which typically VW got license fees, and the ability to do a AD Campaign as to "Why buy a Knock-off when you can own the real thing." But I can remember a Friends Omni that was Turboed out of the Factory….
Oh, the pains of knowing the History of a Critter.

What are the visual differences between Kjet and digifant?
Is cis the same as kjet? I was under the impression I had kjet (cis) because of the braded fuel lines going to the distributor on top of air box.

Digifant fuel injection system from a 1988 Mk2 Golf Gti I owned a few years ago.
K-jet fuel injection system from my 1988 Mk1 Golf Gti cabriolet.
The big vacum valve on the top of the rocker cover and the big idle stablity valve (ISV) next to it are a good give away for the digifant.

Also should be able to use the existing set up with a new 1.6 engine which will be good.
