Locks and Dowels

Hi

I've read post about the lock barrels.

The background
My Mk1 Cabrio 1.8 GTi (1989) didn't have a lock barrel in the passengers door so I've managed to source a door handle with the lock barrel however it did not come with the correct key! So I'm hoping to match the barrel to my existing key that operates all the other locks however I can't find the lock dowels anywhere - is anyone able to help or advise?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Mani

Theres a couple of ways

1, Take the barrel out of the door handle and fit the key into the barrel. File off the protrusions and re-fit. It should then work with that key. Problem is it will also possibly work with other keys.

2, Buy a few old locks and take them all apart so you have a selection of wafers (the little dinky things in the barrel) and then just keep trying them in different orders until something works.

Those are the 2 methods I've used in the past.

Someone else might have a different idea though

No, just a pictorial I had only 2 locks that had to be re-keyed, and it was the one on the trunk where I had to file one of the wafers a wee bit.

I did mine by taking off a cylinder that the key works in. Carefully take the tumblers out (keep them in order). Each one should be numbered. Then you'll end up with the key code 1234567 for example. Find matching tumblers from old locks as stated above or sometimes you can get new. Rebuild your locks with matching key code and all locks should work on same key.

Hi Steve,

Again thank for the advice - I'm trying to source some locks 🤞 as I can't get the dowel kit as it seems to discontinued…

That's the bit I always fail miserably at. They always end up everywhere

A good locksmith will usually have the Wafers, or Dowels as you call them, so you can go to them and have them re-wafer the locks for your keys... or possibly purchase a few of them.

You can buy a new lock set.

See if these guys have a set or if someone is breaking a car complete with keys/locks.
