Lift pump into carb tank.

Post

Yo.

I'm starting work on my swallow. Working back to front so want to sort fuelling.

So do any lift pumps fit into carb tanks? Or am I better off sourcing a gti tank and pumps?

Depending on the year, there shouldn't be a lift pump in a Carbed tank, as the bowl of the carb contains the fuel that the carb uses to keep the engine going and intermittent sloshing of the fuel in the tank usually isn't an issue.

Swallowtails usually didn't have a lift pump, and was only added after the introduction of the GTI series and CIS fuel injection that HARD TURNS and low fuel presented a fuel starvation issue.

Swallowtails should have a 10 Gallon tank and a Full sized spare tire.  Where the 84.5 models were converted from  10 gallon tank to 13, and a space saver spare tire.

So be cautious as to which type of tank you may purchase, as well as most aftermarket tanks don't have a internal swirl pot or baffle inside of them.

Yup I'm aware it doesn't have a lift pump now. I'm wondering if any fit into a carbed tank to avoid using anything aftermarket.

I'll be fitting an injected engine of some sort in the bay.

I don't know if there would be clearance in the tank or the probability of getting the correct sending unit to affix it, but IIRC the Swallowtail was a bottom feeding tank, similar to my Diesel with but a filter screen and baffle.

Jump to my later 89-90 Cabriolets, and I have an  external swirl-pot/sump/filter that is attached via a clip to the side of the tank (right side) with a in-tank lift pump.

The 84.5-93 Cabriolets had a change to the body that shouldn't be on your Swallowtail so I don't know if the sender from a later would work on the early.  The difference is that the senders went from 2 wire to 3, with the 3rd wire was to power the lift pump.

no carb mk1 ever had a lift pump over here, just a mechanical one on the engine. post-84 cabrio and scirocco injection lift pumps drop straight in, grab the swirl pot from the same don or under the car if you can.

also all G40 shape polos have a lift pump that fits, and the same swirl pot under the car. only difference on the lifter is the plug points straight up, so it can make clearance a bit tight for the connector. ideally try to get the angled rubber boot off the donor.
