LHD to RHD

Easy to do / Hard to do?

Hi All

I have an immaculate Mk1

BUT……..
Its LHD!
I am now contemplating changing it to RHD

I know that I will need a RHD dashboard

How much needs changing?

Steering rack
Brake servo and m cyl
Pedal assembly

Is it doable?
Pretty straight forward?

And I guess a damaged or breaking donor would/should have all items required IMG_20200411_144127.jpg

Advice / experiences appreciated

Thanks in advance

Well it isn't as easy as a early MG, Bug-eyed Sprite.
There are some changes to the brake linkage from the pedal to the Brake booster/Servo and the steering gear box, linkages as in tie-rods, and if you have power steering then you may have to change the lines and the brake pedal assembly.

Would I do it on a immaculate mk1 a profoundly oh O'HELL no.  but then again it isn't my car, it is yours

Oh you would also have to re-route your electrics to the Dash, and get a longer speedo cable and that is off the top of my head.

Look at the ETKA….https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/golf/go/1981-26/

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Here's some advice.

Keep it as a lefty, it's how it was supposed to be.

My mk2 is a lefty, I wouldn't change it if someone offered to pay for it and do the work.

Changing gear with your right hand is so wrong..( this is not the usa or europe or anywhere else that drives on the wrong side)

Please please leave it as an original LHD… if you need a RHD then sell that one and find a RHD to keep you happy.

The Mk1 Golf was designed to be left hand drive, that's why the brake servo is where it is and all of us with right hand drive cars have a brake pedal with lots of play in them.

I think you will be better to find a RHD car if you wish to sit on that side of the car and sell your LHD car as the cost and work involved will not be worth it.

I'd sell and buy a RHD.

1983 Mars Red 1.8 Golf GTI
1987 Alpine White 1.8 Clipper Cabriolet

The trouble with doing nothing is that you never know when you are finished.

I am obviously the only one but if its nice condition i would convert it, its just meant for a different country, nothing rare..

It can't be that difficult, I would do it if you really want RHD.
Personally I would keep it LHD and get used to it, it's kinda cool😎

All mk1s are LHD really - just some hacks to make RHD.

I think most of the changes have been mentioned already. Break bar (and the bracket that goes on the other side of the bulk head), dash loom, rack, dashboard, and the odd wire and cable under the bonnet.

Hard bit would likely be making holes for steering column etc and sealing up the old ones.

If you're not attached to that particular car, it might be better to sell. If you are, it's not the end of the world to swap it.

Noun - Car

When the steering wheel was first put into use in automobiles, it was called the whip. The term has now been generalised to classify any automobile.

It would be way easier to remove the engine/tranny to do the specific work related to conversion.
