Injectors problem

Post

right, I'll start from the beginning, I need some help. I have a 83 mk1 gti,
 which was sat for years.
Fuel tank drained and checked, new injectors fitted after testing, old ones clogged, what I cant understand is when the ignition is on and the injectors are pulled out, they all spilling out lots of fuel, I then pull the airflow plate and even more comes out at a good rate, so the engine is being completely flooded, I'm under the impression that nothing should come out of the injectors until, the plate is lifted up, so that's my dilemma, the engine has no chance of starting up because as soon as the ingintion is on the injectors are spurting out fuel. PLEASE HELP ME

any help or advice would be great fully received,

I had a similar problem when I was getting mine on the road a few years ago. You shouldn't have any fuel from the injectors when the engine isn't running and it sounds like you need to adjust the mixture screw.
First of all, your fuel pump should purge for a second when you turn on the ignition and then go off. If it's running continuously then you have another issue with that but you can swap a relay to get the pump running to carry out the next procedures I can't remember which ones though).
You need some containers to catch the fuel, I used old baby bottles that I bought off eBay. Put the injectors in the containers and turn on the ignition and have the pump running. Then you need to adjust the idle mixture screw (the small allen screw on the metering head) until the fuel stops flowing from the injectors. Once you have done that then you shouldn't be flooding the engine and when you lift the plate fuel should flow from the injectors.
This may only be the tip of the iceberg and you may need other parts including the fuel distributor.
Good luck and keep us posted on what you find.

Many thanks Saulty,

I have tried the screw adjustment but does not seem to change the flow coming out, sadly I think it may be a new metering unit (well reconditioned)!!

Thanks for you reply, I will keep you posted.

Another thing that might be worth checking before you bin the fuel distributor is to check that the plunger in it is not stuck. You have to remove the FD from the metering head and the plunger is moved by the flap in the metering head. If it is badly stuck though you will probably need a new FD anyway. I got mine off eBay 2nd hand and it's been absolutely fine!

Thanks for the advice guys. I've checked the pin and its fine, sadly, im just slowly realising that it's looking like a new metering head
