Inherited a very rundown Mk1 Citi Golf, feeling overwhelmed

Post

My older brother left me his Mk1 Citi Golf and it is in terrible condition but I want to fix it up. I know nothing about cars.

So, where do I start?

The car is a rust-bucket, but I want to do what I can to fix it. I don't have a lot of money. I know that the first things to do are to get it washed and serviced, but I am worried about getting ripped off by a mechanic. I can't afford to replace any of the main engine components right now. But I don't want to drive a death trap so will do what is necessary. The interior is a mess, the radio and speakers have been stolen so I will have to get them replaced. The main issue is major rust damage to the car. I think the area is called the windscreen scuttle? There are two large holes. Is there any way to fix this, or will I have to get the entire part replaced? The boot is also a mess. The cargo cover is makeshift and I will probably need to get the whole thing replaced but it's not urgent. The VW badge has also been stolen. Is the car a lost cause? It still drives fine. Just looking for some encouragement and advice for a complete novice that knows literally nothing about cars. Thank you.  IMG_7136.jpg IMG_7138.jpg IMG_7139.jpg

You have a lot of work to do there.
Without any knowledge, skills or money…… hmmmmm.

If you look at my build thread " 1991 clipper recommission " I replaced sections of the scuttle panel similar to your issues,, it will give you an idea of the work involved.

Just my two cents, as with any restoration job just be prepared for being overwhelmed and totally demoralized. Be prepared to see the job through. Once you start, start with the little things first and gradually build up to the bigger jobs. I've got two cabs right now. One is totally intact but needs overhauled and the other is in a million pieces stripped back down to nothing but nuts and bolts. It's overwhelming and sad to see your baby in bits lol but give yourself a little pat on the back everytime you do or finish one of those little jobs. Celebrate those because it will make you do the next step then the next step and then you'll eventually finish the car. Just look online and you'll see thousands of people who have stripped down cars and lose interest in the process and end up selling them as project cars because it's hard and a lot of work. Tonight I just got my engine back together and will be working on the bodywork next. It's a process, also be prepared for finding stuff that's broke or damaged and needs fixed along the way. Be prepared for obsolete parts too, that's not fun. Be in it for the long haul and you'll get it done.
