Heating control cable

Hello all,

Heating controle cable on my golf 1 has snapped.
I find spare one, and i want to replace it.
Can anyone explain me procedure how to replace?
Do i need to remove complete dashboard to get to place where cable goes into engine department, or there is some easier way…?
