Does it matter which pipe

Hello

I have had my Mk1 converted to 1.8t for a while but I had a minimalist bay. I am now wanting it to look a bit more factory and, as I am now getting a bit older, I would like some comforts returning. This includes refitting the heater.
Obviously the 1.8t has the metal pipe running to the water pump and the flange from the side of the head. Will it matter which pipe the heater valve is fitted to?
It's just that the metal pipe is a direct fit to 1 of the matrix pipes and the other pipe has a nice distance between the pipe and the flange on the head to fit the valve.
I'd just like to make sure this will work fine?

Cheers, Skipp

The heater valve is connected by a 3" rubber hose to the heater by-pass hard line to the upper or the left hose as you are looking at it.  When going back I strongly urge you to use the Porsche 944 Heater Valve (you have to mount it upside down as far as the cabeling goes as it is a smoother valve on your heater sliders.

The lower or right hose comes out of the side of the head, and goes in to the Barbed fitting, which I suggest that you substitute a 5/8" Barbed Brass hose coupler you can buy at either a good garden center or auto parts place as it will not break on you.

So the heater valve must be connected to the hose coming from the metal pipe and not from the side of the head?

That is how it has always been since I have been wrenching on my 81 Diesel, and 89, 90, 92, and 93 Cabbies.

If you do replace the valve on the car besure that you follow the directional arrow for flow control.  IIRC the coolant flows to the core…..(matrix as you call it, good set of movies is you ask me.)
