advice sought re. replacement switch
Hi, the headlamp switch on my 1988 cabrio has given up the ghost. Looks like it's overheated and melted. Anyway: although I understood that these switches are usually 8- or 10-pin, mine is 9! The VW part no. is 323941531F - or more properly 323 941 531F. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to use any other model switch or is the ONLY one to use?
Reading around, I learn that the overheating problem could have been avoided altogether had I fitted an upgraded headlight loom complete with relays. Suffice to say I now have one on order!
Thanks!

you need to use the right switch to match your loom, failing to do so can cause loom melty-ness.
if you can get the right plug to match the later 10 pin switch then you can probably re-pin it comparing the old and new terminal numbers depending which terminal is missing.
the earlier 8 pin as above but issue with those is the looms are made differently, the dash lighting feed is fed from a different location and so isnt fused unlike later 9 & 10 pin variants so I would try to stick with those if you can
