Handbrake broke

My handbrake

My handbrake broke. It has come apart and it doesn't seem to want to go back together.  This is frustrating because I like in a hilly area. Is there a back to putting it back together.

It's a 1984 jetta.

Thanks for the help.

Take a front seat out, then it will be easier.

If a rear cable broke then it can appear to be the hand brake assembly.

You can usually tell because the bracket will be off kiltered… that is it won't be even pull on both sides, and the side that is out further as in the bracket will pull one way.. is usually the broken one.

the clip that holds the center pivot on, has a pry apart catch os make sure that it is off the edge before you try to "spring it off, and it can fly…. Try finding that black clip on black carpet.

I have never removed a seat to "fix" it.
I just slide them all the way back.

break down of the assembly.

A lot of times it is the push rod and the pawl 3 that get flipped as that was the more common issue on my cars over the years…

12 is often missing or sometimes comes loose, causing 11 to work its way off. When its half on half off, pivoting just the lever and one side of the bodywork support, it never feels or works right. But that's just a guess.

2 can flip round too, if its been misassembled. And sometimes 7 slips off, especially if the cables are uneven possibly due to one part-seizing or just being out of adjustment.
