Getting reverse lights to work on 82 VW Mk1 Golf Cabrio (Rabbit Convertible)

Settling In
I am writing on behalf of my brother who is restoring a an 82 VW Mk1 Golf Cabrio (Rabbit Convertible) in the US.
He is having trouble getting the reverse lights to work. The car has the rectangular 4 pin outer setup on the switch on the gearbox.
Any thoughts on what may be going on?
