Gearbox inspection plug

Post

After flushing my heater matrix with a hose pipe I've realised I have a badly damaged gearbox inspection plug which is missing the cap so think water would have entered the hole/gearbox? I'm not using the car or started it for a while, I've ordered a new plug with cap and was looking for advise on draining it / filling it and what oil to use. Cheers 👍🏻 image.png

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

DO NOT POUR ANY OIL IN THAT HOLE, you will just pour gearbox oil all over your clutch and fly wheel, wreck your clutch then the oil will just drip all over the floor.

That plug is for checking the timing marks NOT for gearbox oil.

The drain plug is underneath the gearbox and the filler hole is on the side of the gearbox near the green metal cap.

You remove the plugs with a 17mm allen key or you can buy a socket like this.

If you have never changed the gearbox oil and don't know how old it is change it now, gearbox oil is very often over looked and for the price of an oil change it will make the gearbox smoother and last longer.

Great website on gearboxes.
Welcome to BrokeVW.com

Lots of different gearbox oils out here but this is the oil I used and 67% off at the moment with the "BLACKFRIDAY" code.

2L is plenty for an oil change as you will never drain out all the old oil.

Well, I will tell you that I once had a tick tick tick, that was driving me crazy, barely 20K on the odo, and out of warranty.. On a Sunday I decided to drain the gear box oil, and refill.  Well this was my first diesel, and my first VW.  No Bentley, or Haynes I decided to fill the 1.9L of 85wt in to the hole on the top of the tranny.  Yep, 1.9L on my clutch plate.  As I was driving home my clutch started to slip… I had that DOH moment……

After arriving home I knocked the lower inspection plate loose, and drain all the oil out.

Only thing I had on-hand was Dawn Dishwashing Detergent, and hot water, I re-bolted the inspection plate, filled the clutch with about 2 gallons of hot water and 1/4 cup of Detergent, started the car and worked the clutch.  The Soap was bubbling out everywhere.  :)

I took my other car and got 1.9 L of new oil and filled it via the speedo-cable.

While I was out, I also bought 1 gallon of pure Alcohol, and 4 cans of Brake-Kleen.

Now I drove the bubbly car to the Quarter Car Wash with about 10 dollars in quarters.

I used the engine degreaser in to the spinning clutch plate and then rinsed it till all the bubbles went away.

Proceeded to pour 1/2 gallon of Alcohol and spin dry.
Followed by 3 cans of Brake-Kleen then a hot soapy bath followed by a rinse, all the while working the clutch.

Last was a bath of Alcohol, and a drive, it slipped a wee bit but was better….

Monday I called around to have the clutch changed and was quoted 120-200 dollars. I was only making 220/wk at the time….

I drove the little beastie back to the car wash for a rinse soap re-peat of the day before as I figured that for 200 I could experiment a bit.  Well over the next 3 days I would take a break from work, and rinse re-peat.  After about a week, I was driving a car that didn't slip….

Speed forward 110K later I was changing the clutch for the first time. Inspecting the plate there was no wear and the only thing bad was that one of the plate springs Broke and fell behind the fingers.  When my Father saw that he said I never…. To which I replied, I suppose it needed oil.

So Pouring Oil on a Clutch isn't the end of the world, it can be cleaned, and returned to service….

Oh I found the tick, ticking noise… It was the effin bottle cap wheel covers.  The rivets that held them together loosened….ARGH…..

That's a good price as alot cheaper than other places.
