Gear Selector oil Seal

Post

Hi,

I've got a gear oil leak from the gear selector boot which looks like the attached pic.

I'm told I need a new seal. Can someone tell me what that seal looks like, what it's called and where to get it?

Also is it a gearbox out job?

My car is a 1.8 Clipper 5sp manual

Cheers Paceman, much appreciated.

Will the gearbox have to be removed to fit this.

Thanks

I'd try with it in postion 1st, dont think there is that much in the way on a carb clipper compared to all the K-Jet gubbins in a GTI. Obviously not as easy peering into the engine bay at awkard angles compared to having box on a bench but must be worth a try. Are you sure its that seal and not the speedo drive that leaking?? Or the drive shaft seal slinging oil about?

Thanks,

This is the issue, I'm not sure which is leaking. It could be this seal plus the drive shafts as well.

But I'll try this seal first if I can do myself (without removing the box).

If not I'll have to call my mechanic.

And Kudos by the way for knowing off the bat that a clipper is carbed

You'll need to remove the selector shaft assembly in order to get the seal out. You can probably do that with the gearbox in the car but it will be a whole lot easier to do the job with it out the car.

My rebuild thread I will try and keep up to date: here

Not that much kudos, just that I have a GTI (hatch) and Clipper Cabrio…. Might be worth cleaning up everything, topping up the box and seeing if you can spot where its coming from?
