Gear linkage problems with reverse

Post

hi all, I finally got round to changing my gear linkage on my mk1 gti and it worked great for a few days then I adjusted the selector to the recommended 19mm and it was great the problem I have is that after driving the car for 20miles or half an hour the gears become harder to find especially reverse and 1st, if I then turn the car off and come back to it later the gears work fine no problems but again within 30mins etc the gears start playing up makes no sense any help please as always would be so appreciated. I did follow the gear linkage guide on here the only thing I have noticed is the nut on the selector seems to loosed over time is this correct

Hi all, Looked at a few old posts don't know if my clutch set up is correct I seem to get allot of movement in the cable and I have had to fix it using cable ties into position I saw on another post someone had done similar, why is this guys surely we shouldn't have to resort to this. Any help would be soooo appreciated please.

Not sure about linkage but your locking nut on the clutch cable should be at the top of the thread.
On my later cabriolet I have a plastic clip fitted to the brake master cylinder which holds the cable in place, thick wire works for me.

also set the upwards play on the cable to about 10mm at the box end

did you remember the 2 plastic bushes in the bottom of the gearstick under the car to the main link rod into the engien bay?

As always you guys bail me out! thanks.

Okay I did replace the bushes in side the gear lever, I think from a bit of investigating the clutch wasn't fixed into position and it kept moving from its central position.
I am going to use wire to hold it into place and sort out the nut being at the top and making sure I have 10mm clearance.

thanks again guys let see what happens.
