The clear plug should just pull out to allow inspection of timing marks. The green part does need to be unscrewed if you want to remove that too.

The mechanic was trying to see the timing marks and couldn't through that little hole. Nor could I. He tried removing it to see them but had no luck. The clear plastic plug pulls out easily but the green bit won't unscrew. I have also got a lot of stuff in the way of that and would just like to do it without the green cap on. There must be a way to remove it mate, Do you know what that way is? Lol

Well the green bit unscrews, if it's seized on… butcher it off and buy a new one.

Put the new one on finger tight.

It not a gearbox inspection hole so don't pour oil in as others have or you will just cover your clutch and fly in gearbox oil then it drain out on the floor, it shows you the fly wheel and timing marks.
They are a nightmare to get out sometimes, as already mentioned the white plug pulls out and you will need a large nut or Allen key you remove it if you can't tap it around like your mechanic has tried.
I had trouble removing mine but I was taking the gearbox off so I waited till then and destroyed it while hammering it around with a large screw driver and hammer and collect all the bits from the floor. Once you get so far tapping in around it usually becomes easier you you are able to unscrew it by hand.
It you do try this method keep the white plug in as you don't want bits of green plastic going in the hole.

New one looks like this, lots of places sell them.

When I put the new one in I only screwed it in a little so I could still undo it, it's not all the way in like yours but still keeps the dirt out.

I don't take it out very offen as I don't use a timing light as there is very little room to shine one down there and I time my car by ear and driving but you only really need to do it once.

So what size nut or hex key is it. I would have thought vw would have some kind of weird tool to take it out routinely.

Vw Heritage has replacements for both.
IIRC on my 81 Diesel and 90 cabby, I had to use a Drift on the edges of it to "Loosen it" so I could turn it by hand.  I did also carefully soak the thing in wd-40 as it is after all Nylon in a Aluminum body. I didn't smack the large part, I smacked the edge that was ontop of the housing,,,, that little lip.
Not the Nutted sides or Allen insert lip.

You want a small spray of oil that won't seep on to the clutch.

and I think 27 is correct.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

I used a bolt, put the hex head in and got mole grips on the thread of bolt.

mine was so bad I had to hammer it round all the way till it came out, took ages of back breaking awkward angle badly aimed hammer+chisel smacks. just sooooo awwwwkwaaard

worst case just fully destroy it, pullout the worst of the chunks from the hole and spin it over quick, the rest will fall to the bottom of the bellhousing and you can get it out there if its later model with the seperate tin metal cover.
