Fueling lift pump question - Swallowtail tank

Post

Hi

So me being me I totally overlooked the fact that the fuel sender on a Swallowtail is under the car and on the side of the fuel tank….. I realised this after removing half of my interior to get the ususal place.

So I'm putting in a g40 and was going to use the lift pump and sender that would have 'dropped' straight into the top of my tank….. if I had one there.

So my question is, because the sender is technically on the bottom/side of the tank, do you think I'll get away with just running the external Bosch pump and swirl pot?

Would the g40 lift pump even work in that position?

Or maybe I could run a little pump externally before the swirl pot, to keep that topped up, then the main Bosch pump?

Just thinking of possibilities?

Ah yeah, that's an option I suppose.

It looks like it fits, but I'm kinda worried about wrenching this one out, could be creating more issues.

I think the addition of the Swirl/sump/prefilter, would work and an external pump rated at the PSI you choose.

Personally I have a 92 Cabriolet with a Single in-tank pump, (digi only needs 45 psi), deleted the Swirl pot and all the excessive baggage on
the fuel system, and only see a minor fuel starvation issue on hard left turns when the tank is between 1/4 and lower than the out of gas warning or empty.

I don't know what the inside of the swallowtail fuel tank looks like…..

It doesn't have one, but I need to put one in to run the g40 engine.

The g40 lift pump drops into a 'normal' tank….. I need to know options/suggestions as an alternative as I'm not sure the g40 setup will be happy mounted where my sender currently is.

Yep I read it wrong and corrected my post…
You may have to swap tanks, but the additional Swirl could be added, but then your main would have to do all the work, and it would usually Whine about it.

Depending on where the fuel pump would hit the tank, then you may have to extend the inner hose so the pump can drop and scavage from the bottom of the tank

I have a larger Filter installed in the place of the Normal fuel filter on my cabby as well…. so I think that helps.

Then the condition arises that will a "Cabriolet or POLO" fuel sender fit into the existing hole of the tank or would you have to swap the tank to an earlier 10 Gallon Golf of the early to pre84 Golfs.   You can get a later one as they went to a smaller spare tire, and 13Gallon won't fit the wheel well.

If I got a later tank, I'd have to cut a hole in the car as it doesn't have an access panel like later cars.

I'd really rather not do that.

I'm leaning toward a small pump externally, pre swirl pot, then a Bosch 044, then filter, and onto the engine bay. That way I leave the current sender alone and unmolested?

I dunno? :/

That is the way I would do it, they make external swirls that don't have all the feed lines of the VW.  Place the pump to the tank side and the Swirl after it…. I wouldn't see any issue other than placement/fitting.  But then again with my single Digi fuel pump in tank….. like I said I removed 6 foot of rotted hose, and the  external pump of the digi.

on the digi, and the 84.5 golfs the internal pump was rated at 45psi, on digi the Main pump is rated at 45psi as well, but the CIS is 45 internal and 75 external….so the Banjo Bolts are needed for those.
