Fuel starvation issue!

Post

So I have been having the same fuel problem with my golf for nearly a year now and constantly fixing it and then it breaking down again has led to me coming extremely close to selling it! This is my last hope to fix it!

So I have a 1983 1.5 GL, I think all my problems started last December when I stupidly ran the tank dry. A little while after this the engine would stutter at high speed (at this point it did it very seldom so I thought nothing of it!). Over time the problem worsened and started to occur at lower and lower speeds until eventually I could not drive anywhere as the car would just judder constantly and then cut out. Since then I did many things to fix it including a new carburettor, pump, fuel filters, vapour trap, HT leads, points, condenser, compressed air through the fuel lines.. And fished around the tank with a magnet. For a good 2000 miles all of the previous sorted the problem, but over the past week the issue has come back and I'm now clueless! So if anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

Just to note the car will judder and stutter and then sometimes be fine as if it's cleared the problem for a short space of time… Although when this happens the engine sounds terrible as if the carb was tuned badly. Also it has always idled erratically even when the problem was fixed.
