Fuel pump replay

Engine not starting

Hi,

Golf Mk1 Gti (EG engine prefix)

Have fitted new Topran 103 420 fuel pump relay.
Fuel pump does not run when engine cranking and engine will not fire up.

Have run 12v across the relay and it clicks (but only when the 12v positive is connected to pin 31)
Will not work if positive connected to pin 15.

If I fit a standard relay (number 18) pump runs, engine fires up and runs ok but
pump running continuously when ignition on.

Have checked fuse box wiring and socket 1 feeds back to ignition coil negative.
Socket 87 feeds back to fuel pump
Socket 30 is 12v positive permanent live

AM assuming that as the number 18 relay works fine when ignition switched on that the
12v switched is ok and the earth.

Do I have a duff Topran relay?

Could it be the incorrect polarity?

Any advice very much appreciated.

Car runs fine on the 18 relay but not happy from a safety point of view so not using
it at the moment.

There are a lot of iffy FPR's out there.
From what I know of www.cabby-info.com has a wide variety of bad spec'd relays
From what I gather if the insides don't have the correct stuff, they won't work one way or another.
So yes, your relay is the suspect.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Where are my DIY Links?

Many thanks for that.
The cabby relay list was really useful.
The relay shown as the correct one for mine has the external fuse.
The Topran 103 420 does not but my Golf has the later blade fuse box fitted.
Does this affect the type of relay I need?
I have one with the external fuse but the connecting spades are all the
smaller size whereas the fuse box has the larger ones for the 12v permanent supply and the pump connection.

Thanks again
