Hi all,I have an 84 gti,and I was wondering if I need to put a fuel additive in,or will it be OK on unleaded,as far as I know the engine has never been touched

Yes unleaded is fine, I prefer to use Quality Super a Unleaded costs a bit more, but doing so few miles it's worth giving it the best.

I thought unleaded would burn out the valves, or was I miss informed

No, the valve seats are hardened on most VWs from that era, if you don't run on SuperUnleaded then ignition timing may sometimes need altering if you want to stick to regular unleaded.

vw started hardening the valve seats from sometime in the mid 70s, so no issues whatsoever running your car on unleaded. just mkae sure its super :) I use supermarket 97 in mine from sainsburies, never had any issues regardless of what engine was in my car at the time, 1./8 8v, 2.0 8v, 1.8 16v, 2.0 16v both on kjet and digifant managment :)

It's only old British cars which need lead in petrol to protect the valves, Germany used unleaded petrol long before we did. All water cooled engines are fine with unleaded petrol. My 1978 Scirocco runs on normal unleaded as that will run on old 2 star 91 RON petrol but my Mk1 GTi runs best on 98 RON petrol.
I've been using supermarket super unleaded 97 RON upwards in my Mk1 Golf GTi cabriolet daily drive for 200,000 miles with out any problems…

Super unleaded is best, normal unleaded you will need to retard the timing from the factory set up or the engine will "pink" under load.
