Front suspension top mounts

Hi all. Took my cabby out for a decent drive today after fitting coilover kit and new top mounts.
On the way back there was a noise coming from the front wheels when cornering as if the tyres were catching the arches.
The springs were wound right up when fitted and there seemed to be plenty of cleclearance when i set off this morning.
When i got back and popped the bonnet i noticed the top mount gap had increased quite considerably.
I was hoping to use the car this weekend but am worried that the shocker will push through the mount or it will fail in some way so if anyone can reassure me or just let me know the worse that can happen it may put my mind at rest. The mounts are from vw heritage so i presumed they would be decent quality.
The first picture shows the gap before it went out on the drive today and the others show the gap after.
Any advice please chaps.

What make are the mounts? I would not rely on VW Heritage supplying quality parts without knowing what make they were first. I would go for FEBI or MEYLE parts that can be relied upon as quality replacements. Certainly something is not right with the top mount in your picture. What are they like from the bottom. I wonder if something is missing allowing the shock to push through the mount.

Thanks mate. They are Meyle mounts on there. Have read a few posts about this happening to other people but with no real answer.
A few people suggested the Febi mounts but couldnt get them from vw heritage and was told the Meyle ones were as good.
Not had chance to look underneath yet but will check it out at the weekend.
Would you chance driving it tomorrow or is it an accident waiting to happen.

I would not risk driving it until you get a new top mount on. I am not sure what would happen but would not take the chance. Only my opinion though.

Get the FEBI ones off eBay, about £20 for one or £40 for the pair.

Th car will be ok to drive as long as you don't go mad.

I tried Meyle top mounts and was very disappointed with the quantity, mine seem to drop and gap increase with the car just sat in th garage during the winter and just a few trips out, even Febi top mounts don't last like they used to or the roads have got worse…..

Fit some febi new top mounts and that should help.

This kit is with early style bump stops, they also sell a kit with later style bump stops, only use these bump stops if standard height, cut down or find other stops as the car can drop and ride on the bump stops which is rather bouncy and uncomfortable…

Front suspension top mounts

 My Meyle mounts after 12 months and 4000 miles before I changed them, I do avoid any pot holes…..

O.k. thanks mark1gls. The gap on your mounts seem to be as big as mine. My worry is that this gap has happened only after a 50 mile round trip.
It also seems that now the gap is there the wheels are catching on the arches when cornering and i have the coilovers wound right up.
Have seen some Sachs top mounts @ £40 a corner and was wondering if anyone has tried these or as you say just get a pair of Febi ones and probably expect to be replacing them again soon.

Here is the Trick to making the mounts a tad bit better…
It doesn't matter which type you have FEBI, Meyle, MeisterKraft,  most all all made in china and the rubber has a negative air displacement ratio (they Suck better than a Vacuum)

A product called 3m Window weld, and a weeks wait after installing the product and installation to allow the urethane goo to harden.

The last 2 sets I bought has had issues with the pressed stud spinning on my before I could set the nuts tight.

So I had to have my son hold the nut up to seat the head of the bolt while I worked my wire welder up the strut tube to tack weld them… So I just tack the heads prior to install, clean prime and paint.

if you can find lemforder those are oem make mounts, easy enough for mk2 but not sure how available the mk1 versions are...
