Front suspension top mounts and a few other issues.

Post

I am making a list of winter jobs and materials needed to complete some of them and would like some hints and tips on what to get and what to look out for when I carry out these jobs. The car is a 1983 1.8 GTI tintop. I am running all standard at present and I would like to keep it this way.

I have play in my front suspension top mounts, only noticeable when I jack the car up and lift the wheels. I was looking at these on eBay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301976738194?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I also plan on changing the engine mounts as I have  fair bit of vibration when the engine is running and I was looking at these and it feels like the engine moves a fair bit when I accelerate hard or drive it enthusiastically:

I also have a problem with the sunroof, when I close the sunroof it doesn't push the wind deflector down enough and I have to help it by hand (not very easy when you're driving and want to close the sunroof!). I have read a few posts on the slider guide pieces but I was unsure what to get! Are these the ones?

Just wondered if anybody had any feedback on the items I've listed or suitable alternatives and any advice on things I need to look out for.

Many thanks.

Matt.

Engine mounts.
The side mounts are tricky to change as they need pressing out and in and don't usually give any problems, just replace the front and rear mounts as they take all the punishment.

Top mounts,
There is 2 types of bump stops make sure the kit is the right type as they are the early type.
I've always use Febi ones but the last set did not last long so I'm trying Meyle at moment and they don't seem to be doing very well as a large gap is appearing already and I've only done 1000 miles on them!

Don't now about sun roof as I don't have one in a Cabriolet ;-)

For the strut mount,  I placed a new pair on about a month ago.  I filled the Gap at the bottom with 3m Window Weld, and let it dry for about a week prior to installing,

Also if you can tack weld the studs at the bottom tp prevent them from spinning free.  How ever is yours did spin free, you can worm a Wire Welder up the Strut and Tack weld them to remove or re-install.  I know I had it happen on me on a brand new pair I was installing about 3 years ago.

Ride height is a tad higher, but still if it holds up longer than 5 years cool.  The other nice thing is the place where I bought the mounts from have a Life Time Warranty on them.

For the Drivers side engine mount, when you cut the old one out of the bracket,  Trim a bit of rubber off the old mount, a serated knife and wd-40 works good for cutting the rubber.  Then place that at the top of the mount, when the mount fails in the future, the engine won't drop and screw up the shifting.  It also reduces the up and down travel of the mount making it last a wee bit longer.

My two pence.

What do Divorces, Great Coffee, and Car Electrics all have in common?

They all start with GOOD Grounds.

Thanks for the help you two ! My right hand engine mount (timing belt end) has started to separate and the gearbox mount is cracked/perished so I thought I'd do the lot!

As for the top mounts, how do I tell what sort of bump stop I need (mines a 83 1.8 GTI)? Also, why do you put the window weld around? I assume the top mount contains the bearing which has failed on mine!

Thanks again.

The window weld keeps the mount from raising.  I placed a new set on one of my Cabbies and it was almost at the point of the old one that I replaced.
