Get someone to turn the wheel while you watch the shock mount…I have seen some where the inner top bush isn't quite tall enough so your strut binds the top mount and winds up like a rubber band, then springs back. Makes one heck of a noise.

Hi
Yeah its like that the spring twangs back into place at the top mount its not moving freely
Whats the fix? The top mounts bearing spacer collars are missing have ordered some but it was ok without them before?

The top mount has a inner bush, and it is barely above the mount steel what is happening is that the bottom of the mount is hitting the top strut retainer and pinching the mount. The strut isn't able to turn within the mount, so it is acting like a spring being wound up. The spacer prevents the top nut and washer from compressing the mount.  I also liberally smother the top bushing and strut shaft with grease.

Over here at our local hardware stores that I go to they have a vast "Pick-a-Nut" selection, and they have various bushings and collars.  I have been known to get one from then and File it down or Drill it to the proper diameter… I suppose you could back the tension off the Top Nut, but until you get the bushing or spacer it will still cause the issue….

The other end is that the spacer or Bushing is too tall and the stut beats the hades out of the mount…. it is like Goldilocks, has to be just right.

When I buy the mounts I make sure that they have the bushing in the kit.  I also take a minute to clean the steel on the bottom of the strut and stud and weld that sucker as I had one spin on me as I was replacing the strut assembly……   couldn't get it on or off, so I clamped it from above to hold the stud up flat, and wound my arm and wire welder up there to weld it in place so I could lower it and weld it proper, then paint it, I did both studs, the second strut was welded prior to me putting it in the car…. That was the first strut mount that has ever done that to me….in 30+ years of wrenching on MK1's
