Engine won't start for more than 3 seconds

Engine starts up and then dies almost straight away

Hi guys,
We have done an engine sway on a mk1 golf gl. The original was a 1.5 auto engine and we have gone to a 1.8gti manual.

When we fire it up it never starts up for more than about 3 seconds before cutting out again.

We tried adjusting the fual/air ratio to very very rich and it started up nicely but there was a lot of petrol daffodil out of the injectors - we had forgotten to tighten them up.

After tightening the injectors it just went back to exactly what it was doing before. We tried pretty much every setting of the fuel/air ratio screw but it gives the same result each time.

Have had the timing looked at, almost completely sure that is fine.

Have the HT leads going to the right cylinders (I think. Can't tell what exact engine we have as it is different from most on google images of mk1 golf 1.8 gti. However all the cylinders seem to fire so it seems right.

Please help, its really prolonging the project.

May be the cold start problem which is very common with the GTI engine, i know on mine i changed the 5th injector and the warm up regulator and that cured my problem.

i had a similar problem that turned out to be the fuel pump relay.

What have you done to get the fuel into the injection system? eg.
Which fuel pump have you used?
what fuel tank?
Lift pump in tank?
Fuel pump relay and electrics?
Have you fitted a accumulator?
Fuel tank return?
Which injection system do you have, K-jet or digifant?

Post up a picture of your engine and we may be able to help with identify it.
