Engine Fuel Pump not sucking fuel from tank

Post

My MK1 1983 1.5l golf GX has had a new fuel pump fitted but when we turn the car over it doesn't suck any fuel from the tank as it's not producing any suction. We tried taking it out and putting it back in many times but we don't seem to know what the issue is. Anyone know if there is something specific we need to do?
Cheers

do you have a picture of what you are looking at, as its simple pump…can you here it running?  check fuses, and check fuel pump relay.

83's don't have intank pumps as pictured.
The 1.5 could be a mechanical pump on a Carbed car, but not on a CIS.

84.5 and up Cabby's have the dual pumps and larger tanks over here.

I would be thinking that he has a filter or tank issue as in bad swirl pit restricted screen in the tank totally rusticated tank or filler neck that is allowing fine particulates to clog stuff up.

Tank inspection is warranted, as he should be mindful of having way less than 3/4 of a tank before popping of the cover, better to have 1/2 or less.

The 83 should still be a bottom feeder off the tank instead of the top.  As the top would be the fuel sending unit only on a 83.

Yes it's a mechanical pump at the bottom of the engine it doesn't have any suction when the engine turns over from the pipe going to the pump from the tank. Here's a image of the pump and I'm not sure what is wrong as it sucks when we move the lever manually. image.jpg

20190528_184841.jpg Oh so if not working at that point then the pump lever is not connected inside.  Maybe  Brian knows what to look for..I'm cis only upto now…my Rocco is gonna be new to me been a carb 20190528_184849.jpg 20190528_184904.jpg

I would also replace the sensor that is situated on top of the oil filter flange otherwise you will lose all your oil.

Have you got the old one to compare, if a pattern replacement the lever may not be long enough and the cam isn't lifting it far enough to pump?

Are you 100% sure the tank/pipes are not blocked? A common MK1 issue. Can you draw fuel up to the pump? (petrol tastes fab lol)

I love the taste of Petrol in the . morning Cup of joe.

I too would ask that if you manually tried to pull fuel out of the Tank by cycling the pump by hand.

I forgot that years ago on a Truck I had I got the new fuel pump that I had the push arm on the wrong side of the shaft and it wouldn't pump at all.  I took it off, and replaced it and I will be darned if it didn't start working.
:) .

If you have a Mighty-Vac you might try sucking fuel out of the feed pipe as that will answer you very quickly….You do have a Liter or 4 of fuel in the tank?
Just saying….
