Electric Windows

Post

Hi All, I will try to cut a long story short and would really appreciate any help. I came to my car this morning and my drivers side window was down. The switches still light up and there is clicking from behind the dash from both switches and I can't see that a fuse has gone. One window is up and one is down but neither work. Please, any suggestions. Thank you all in advance.

Check the cables behind the switches. And then pop door cards off and try a multi meter to the connection  ,you may need a fully charged battery or car running to boost the voltage. I found that mine need to be tugged about and then greased after been unused..

Would that be the cause of both windows just stopping working?

A bad ECM or window controller module under the dash.

Usually Caused by rain drains in the Scuttle Tray being plugged and allowing water to migrate through the scuttle and over the ecu.

Everything I know about Electric windows can be found here.

That's a bit too tech for me. The car hasn't seen wet weather for over 10 years. It's started and driven regularly. The battery is fully charged. The fuses look ok but can't read German so not sure which fuses to check.

Fenster is window. In german..

Like Brian says check box,but that's only if its oem ..aftermarket are but more basic..pull switches out and have alook for connection. Similar to what's behind most radios.  Was all working ok before?

All is completely standard. Had the switches out for both sides. All connections are good. No wet anywhere in site. The windows were working Wednesday. Been in the garage today and the drivers side window was open. Got the keys, pressed the button to wind the window up and nothing. Tried the passenger side window and it wasn't working either. Just out the blue.

You won't "SEE" a blown fuse under the Dash, it isn't unless you measure voltage on both sides to ground, or take it out and see the burned mark…

Take the controller down and out and verify that a spring isn't off the relay, or corrosion, cold solder joints..Broken pins, Wires that are broken in the door fold, there are a ton of things that it could be,,,, I had one where the wire was broken in the Bend, and if I opened the door with it would work, if I opened it slightly it would die….

When you say take the controller down do you mean the cover under the fuse box in the passenger footwell? Do you know which number Fuse or relay it is. I know nothing about electrics.......at all.

In the first web link there are the wiring diagrams as to how it works, they are also in the back end of the Bentley or Haynes.

The fuse panel is as: 90-93FusePanel.png

Thank you Kammy, from Cabby-info.com.

Tip, there is a Brown/White wire that goes in to the controller, that is the Door open Power remove.

If you cut that wire and Tape both ends, then when you get the module working, you can roll the windows up or down for about 10 minutes after the key is out.

If you forgot to roll the window up after you have opened the door, then just hit the switch and the windows will roll up.

You guys have been fantastic. I will have a look tomorrow now. Having a Cabby that has never faulted in over 10 years has left me with a lack of experience on how to repair if. I will report back in tomorrow ( after Sunday lunch) with the results. I really appreciate the advise given and if you have time to review my unsuccessful or successful results with your opinions I will be greatful.

Just thought. The button for the electric roof is in the middle of the window buttons and that's working fine.

Check the fuse as picture above. Up on the top of the box.. if you can get 2 wires and power window directly with 12v it will go up or down, swap wires accordingly..  if you have the control box then investigate connections to that.
A multi meter is great investment even a cheaper 10£ version will be great for chasing issues.

Haha you just have to open door.card and pop on the connector to motor with it set  at dunno 20v  should say 10-13 on gauge when power window pressed be it analog or digital.
Multimeter….Plug the black probe into COM and the red probe into the socket marked VΩ. Set the range to DC or AC volts and touch the probe tips to the two points between which voltage needs to be measured.

Thanks mate. Door card is off and everything is stripped on the drivers door. Still find it strange that both windows have stopped working at the same time.

All help is appreciated.

Thanks for the guide. Would you have any idea why it would work perfectly well then the next time I go to it one of the windows is down and both have stopped working. Fuses are good, the buttons are clicking and I can hear the switch clicking behind the dash and the fuse is ok.
